RAINBOW RAILROAD
Campaign: “Join the Railroad”
(Freelance) Client: Tagg Magazine
We all deserve to feel safe being our authentic selves. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case for LGBTQ+ folks. In countries across the world, discrimination, prosecution, and cultural beliefs put LGBTQ+ lives at risk. That’s where Rainbow Railroad comes in.
Inspired by America’s infamous Underground Railroad, Rainbow Railroad helps at-risk LGBTQ+ folks get to safety. Rainbow Railroad reached out to Tagg to inform more LGBTQ+ women about how easy — and impactful — volunteering with Rainbow Railroad can be.
I worked with Rainbow Railroad representatives to ideate, commission or write, and promote three different stories to help achieve this goal.
BRANDED CONTENT: “Kendra Frith Escapes”
For the first article, we wanted to show readers what Rainbow Railroad does and why that work matters. I commissioned writer Abby Stuckwrath to interview Kendra Frith, a queer Jamaican woman who’d fled Jamaica with the help of Rainbow Railroad. The article carefully told Frith’s story while covertly driving home the impact of volunteering. Read the full article here.
BRANDED CONTENT: “Volunteer in community”
For the second article, we highlighted one of Rainbow Railroad’s Partners: a church whose congregation decided to focus its outreach on supporting LGBTQ+ refugees entering the United States. This article showed readers that volunteering could be a communal decision requiring less time than they might initially think. Read the full article here.
The third story investigated the ways that LGBTQ+ folks get left behind during relocation efforts, whether that be leaving an unsafe home country or coming into a new “safe” country. Rainbow Railroad representatives served as experts, explaining how difficult the process of helping someone reach safety can be. Understanding the obstacles inherent in the relocation process helps people better understand volunteering in these situations. Read the full article here.
